In spring 2012, the American Jewish World Service launched Where Do You Give?, a national contest asking designers to reimagine tzedakah, or monetary charity, for modern giving. The assignment: to design a new vehicle for giving that would inspire society to think differently about where we give, to whom and why, and to spark conversation about philanthropy and social change.

My concept is a large-scale sculpture that functions both as a receptacle for tzedakah and as a catalyst for community engagement in local causes and reflection on the act of giving. This tzedakah box would be part of a program where communities or private organizations such as synagogues, companies, or schools could obtain a sculpture and select a recipient for all the change it takes to fill the sculpture. While all this change may not amount to an extremely large sum of money, it would raise awareness about about a deserving cause and could prompt larger, private donations from individuals. When the sculpture is full, the process would start over, but with a new recipient.

My project was chosen as one of three grand prize winners among nearly 70 total entries by a panel of judges from both the Jewish and design communities. Read more about my entry here.

<description>"In 2011, a group of girlfriends decided it was time to introduce something to the beer world that had never been done before: beer for women who love beer. No light, girly, watered-down beer here, thank you. They called it Ambrewsia, after Greek mythology's ambrosia, a nectar-like delicacy reserved only for the divine gods and goddesses on Mount Olympus. Brewed with the finest barley and choicest hops, this nectar of the goddesses came to life. For all the strong, beautiful, beer-loving women of the world, we're proud to give you Ambrewsia— for the goddess in all of us."

For my senior project, I invented the Ambrewsia Beer Company and created its identity and applications from concept to (small-scale) production.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/115359/1746108/ambrewsia logo bw.jpg" width="670" height="250" width_o="670" height_o="250" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/115359/1746108/ambrewsia logo bw_o.jpg" data-mid="8590578" border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/115359/1746108/ambrewsia logo color.jpg" width="670" height="250" width_o="670" height_o="250" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/115359/1746108/ambrewsia logo color_o.jpg" data-mid="8590579" border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/115359/1746108/ambrewsia mark bw.jpg" width="670" height="480" width_o="670" height_o="480" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/115359/1746108/ambrewsia mark bw_o.jpg" data-mid="8590581" border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/115359/1746108/ambrewsia mark color.jpg" width="670" height="480" width_o="670" height_o="480" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/115359/1746108/ambrewsia mark color_o.jpg" data-mid="8590583" border="0" align="left"/&#62;IDENTITY:
The challenge in designing a logo for Ambrewsia was visually combining the concepts of beer, femininity, and Greek mythology into one. I came to a solution using a stylized Greek column as the basis for an elegant, custom-lettered logotype. An alternate logo uses a wreath of barley to further convey the brand's story. The lettering and column motif would serve as visual reinforcements of Ambrewsia's identity in the brand's application system.

The design of the Ambrewsia bottle label is clean, traditional, and typographic. The four color schemes distinguish the four varieties of beer the company would produce, all named for Greek goddesses: Athena Classic City Pale Ale, Demeter Honey Wheat, Persephone Pomegranate Wheat, and Aphrodite Amber Belgian.

The 6-pack carrier is as important as a promotional item as it is a practical packaging item. Its design reinforces the visual and conceptual qualities of the brand through its color scheme, continuation of the column motif, and prominent placement of the logotype.

As with the six-pack carrier, the design of the four-pack serves to reinforce the identity of the product it holds. To account for a narrower front face than its six-pack counterpart, the four-pack uses the alternate Ambrewsia brandmark to identify and promote the brand, as well as create variety within the product line while maintaining recognizability.

The case holds either four six-packs or six four-packs and is designed to emphasize the brand on all sides through the logotype, brandmark, or continued column motif on either end.

Again the obstacle of combining beer with femininity. The first challenge in devising posters for Ambrewsia was advertising specifically to women, in contrast to beer ads which objectify women as a way to advertise the beer. I decided on a typographic approach. I simplified the letterforms I'd designed for the logotype and expanded the character set to include all the letters I would need. The final posters communicate beer through the arrangement of type into recognizable beer glass (and bottle) shapes, and convey femininity through the copy and the treatment of type and color.

<description>METALS: In the summer of 2010 I took a jewelry/metals class in Cortona, Italy and discovered a special fondness for metalworking. It becomes a very personal thing, to spend hours and hours sawing and filing and torching and sanding a blank slab of metal until finally it's transformed into a fine object. It's a process that demands concentration, dedication, and precision— just like good design.

RELIEF PRINTS: From the physical involvement in carving linoleum or wood, to measuring and tearing paper, to mixing and rolling inks, I love the tactile experience of creating a print. It is a method for making images that's engaging and not always perfect, and I believe that makes the results all the more interesting.
